6th day, monday morning Rome NY, dunkins after leaving lock 21

Slept super well at lock 21 last night.

met a couple guys, 60 somethings, from North Carolina area.   die hard liberals.   had some fun chats.   told them about the book I'm listening to,  " The man who broke capitalism"   Bill immediately got it off Libby to read.    Terry was a former nuclear power engineer for Duke Power.   he had some good science/nerd stories Nothing scandalous.

Before we all left a boat came through the lock pushing a really old rusted barge.    the couple are going to use it for an entertainment venue where they live.    The lady quipped she just hopes it doesn't sink right after they finish the  build.
only planning on going as far as Ilion today.   it's the next big town after Utica, heading east.   Bill and Terry were going faster and further,  To lock 15.   they had proper road bikes.    they were skinnier and lighter too.   both bikes and riders.   it's not a race and i'm focusing more on enjoying the ride.   At ilion i plan on visiting the laundromat.   my hotel bath clothes washing mostly worked, but all my clothes will be beyond ripe after my ride ends today.    I plan on changing in the laundry's bathroom into just my speedo with my rain jacket and rain pants over it for modesty, everything else is getting washed.    i'll be back to everything being ripe by the time i get to Glenmont, but i have a fresh change of clothes in the truck.   I'll do laundry at home once i drive back, probably Friday after staying over at Chuck and Bea's

Slept great

First Bikepacking Trip

My kingdom for a pair of scissors!   More on that later.   Actually I'm ordering these fiskar ones to keep in my tool bag.     I trust myself with scissors but not a small knife in the middle of nowhere out in the woods.      https://a.co/d/6AycWwH       The trip was fun and a success.   i didn't forget anything (see previous blog packing list); i've just realized having a small pair of scissors would be very useful for trimming tire plugs and opening stubborn dehydrated meal bags. Sunday night I camped in the truck's GFC camper at one of my favorite spots near where my bike trip was going to start.   I wanted to get an early start Monday morning which is easier when you're just a 15 minute drive away vs 3 hours.    And no I'm not posting online where my preferred camping spot is because it's mine, ALL MINE!!!!.    jk, but yeah, on principle it's silly to list your favorite sp...

Erie Canal Ride, the day before Prep and Plan

Tuesday So the plan is Tuesday (tomorrow as I write this), Jacqui and I drive separate to her folks place just south of Albany.      Jacqui's folks will be busy, so we'll just be dropping off Jacqui's car and she'll ride with me in the truck as we continue the drive to Buffalo.    It'll probably be about 6-6.5 hours of driving Tuesday.   Anyhoo, I booked a nice hotel (homewood suites by Hilton) that's closer to the airport than downtown.    We'll be a 20 minute drive from the Erie Canal starting point.    I would have booked something downtown, but I didn't want to worry about parking my truck in a downtown parking garage.    The room has a little built-in kitchen so I'm bringing a thawed bag of my meatballs and sauce so I can carbo load some spaghetti Tuesday night.     I have all my cooking stuff in the back of the truck in case the room's kitchen is poorly stocked, and I have the truck's electric cooler to bri...

Overland Expo East 2024 Saturday and Sunday

Saturday morning no 10 am seminar this morning, but i did wake up earlier than i expected, so i rode down for the 9a.m. opening before the crowds of day visitors swarmed. The Bronco guys turned their music off around 10-10:30 last night, but they were "drunk" loud. I'm sure they thought they were being quiet when talking around their little propane campfire, but drinking makes you deaf. Anyway, I ran into Jeff mid morning while walking around. I bought another 6 pack of roperollers from the Rollercam booth. And finally, I wrapped up the morning by getting a ridiculously overpriced burger after waiting in line 15 minutes and waiting another 20 for the burger to be ready. Burger was maybe ⅓ lb size? just cheese, no toppings, nothing else and it was $20. with a coke and tip closer to $30. should have just gone back to my truck to eat lunch, or better yet, gone to the taco or bbq trucks. NEVER get the fresh burger from a food truck when the line is long. T...
