2apr sunday utah goblin state park.
this morning we drove to Goblin State park. a funny name that they gave to the stone formations there. you look down into a small valley and there’s all these little stone pillars that look like misshapen snowmen.
you walk down a 2-3 floors worth of steps and then you can walk around the valley. very cool. the younger kids really enjoyed it, and lots of people brought their dogs to walk around. Loving Utah, but walking around when it’s upper 40’s low 50’s is comfortable. I can’t imagine what it’s like in 90-100 degree heat.
in the afternoon. we drove south on rt 24. going through another national park, that’s more like a scenic drive. Capitol Reef National Park. there were some Native drawings etched into the cliffs. Jeff wanted to stop at this tiny little frontier sod/rock home that was in the park, and I wasn’t sure why. he had me look at the placard. forget the name (took a photo) but mom dad and about a dozen kids lived in the one room cabin that was maybe 10x12ft. they must have stacked the kids in like cordwood.
after that pressed on and switched to 12 west that goes up and over an mountain. we drove about as high as 9500 ft per GaiaGps. the snow was so high even Jeff couldn’t see over the snowbanks along the top. they must have some sort of mega blower machine to keep the road clear in Winter. We descended to where we’re camped now.
tomorrow we go up to Bryce National Park. about 77 miles, but it’s up high. Jeff checked they still have about 40” of snow pack still.
sleeping at 6700’ will be interesting. hopefully the heater works, but that’s why i have gear that keeps me warm to -15F. I have the Planar portable 2d diesel heater, and it’s supposed to work up to 8500 ft automatically. yay technology! this morning I downloaded some photos from my camera (the app doesn’t do full res wifi transfer in the phone’s app, so you’ll have to wait until I get home)
selfies are from canyonlands.
